Nauru Chief Justice

The Republic of Nauru is seeking expressions of interests from Judges or experienced lawyers who wish to be considered for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nauru. 

Under Article 49(2) of the Constitution of Nauru, the President of Nauru appoints the Chief Justice. A person qualifies for appointment to the position if the person: Holds or has held high judicial office in a Commonwealth country (either at state or federal level); or is a legal practitioner who has over 15 years post-admission practice in a country prescribed by law

Overriding Principle:                                                                      

 Appointment will be made on basis of merit. Consideration will be given to overall legal experience, including that outside mainstream legal practice.

Selection Criteria and Professional Attributes:

The following attributes are considered essential for the position:

  • 15 or more years of legal practice in common law jurisdiction

Proficiency in the law and its underlying principles

  • High level of professional experience and expertise and ability in the area(s) of professional specialization

Applied experience (through the practice of law or other branches of legal practice)

  • Excellent intellectual and analytical ability

Demonstrated track record and experience as a legal practitioner who has practiced in both civil and criminal law and/or family law

The following attributes are considered as desirable for the position:

Demonstrated experience as a sitting judge in a common law jurisdiction

Capable of making fair, balanced and consistent decisions according to law without delay

Experience or ability to work in a small developing country

Experience or ability to work in a multi-cultural environment

Abilities to discharge duties promptly

Capacity to work under pressure with limited resources

Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with peers and members of the public

Ability to clearly explain procedure and decisions to all parties

Effective management of workload

Committed to promoting proper judicial administration and leading continuous improvement in court policy and practices with judicial colleagues

Ability to maintain authority and inspire respect

Willingness to participate in ongoing judicial education

Ability to use, or willingness to learn modern information technology

Personal Qualities:

Good character and Integrity

Independence, discretion and impartiality

Courtesy and patience

Social awareness and cultural sensitivity and tolerance

In addition, the applicants must demonstrate a high degree of professional competence, communication skills, fairness, good temperament, common sense and good judgments in both legal and life experiences and commitment to public and local community service.
