PILON Webinar – Mutual Legal Assistance: Electronic Evidence and Cybercrime
2 December 2020 @ 3.00 pm - 5.00 pm +14
As the world becomes increasingly borderless and crime is more transnational in nature, Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) plays a crucial role in enabling effective cybercrime investigations and prosecutions. The PILON Cybercrime Working Group has developed the ‘PILON Mutual Legal Assistance Handbook: Electronic Evidence & Cybercrime’ as a resource to assist criminal justice practitioners in the Pacific with these challenges.
Guided by content contained in the handbook, the webinar will provide an overview of the MLA process including:
- The relationship between MLA and cybercrime
- Advice on making a request
- The importance of MLA to criminal investigations and prosecutions
- The process of gathering electronic evidence.
Additionally, panellists Senior Legal Officer Kilby Baker from the Australian Mutual Assistance Central Authority and Merran Cooke, Crown Counsel and Mutual Assistance Coordinator at New Zealand Crown Law will discuss two case studies from their MLA experiences, with the view to enhancing participants’ understanding of the MLA process in practice. For further information, please view the agenda.
Participants are able to submit questions via Slido up from now until the event commences using www.slido.com (event code #PILONMLAWebinar). Should participants have any questions arising during the Webinar, they will be able to ask them via the ‘chat’ function in Zoom. The event will be recorded and made available on the PILON website for public viewing thereafter. We look forward to your attendance and participation.
